Silly Saturday 6/30/12

Jacob: “I don’t like your butt”   {yeah, well, I don’t either. But what’s YOUR problem?}

We were heading to the pool and when we pulled into the parking lot Jordan starting saying “Papa Papa” I told him “Papa is not going to be here today” and he went absolutely nuts screaming and crying. He cried and cried and cried and every time we asked him what was wrong he would cry and say “Papa” So funny!

Jacob: “Is it warm today?”
Me: “Yes”
Jacob: “Oh. It’s the PERFECT day to go to the pool!”

Jacob: “Are you going to remember to put on your sunscreen this time?” {yes, mother}

Our Trip To The Zoo

Two weekends ago we took our annual trip to Binder Park Zoo to see the animals and feed the giraffes. We have gone every year since 2006, except for some reason last year. So it was Jordan’s first time there. And Jacob’s first time that he remembers. He was only one and a half the last time we went.

It was a hot day but it didn’t feel too uncomfortable for us. The best part was that it wasn’t as crowded as it is some days. We were able to see lots of animals and didn’t have to wait a long time for things. The boys both liked the petting zoo although one of the goats sneezed and it scared Jordan. Jacob enjoyed brushing the goats at the petting zoo.

The best part of the day for all of us was feeding the giraffes. It took Jordan awhile to warm up to the idea of it but once he did, he loved it. Jacob was all for it right away and loved it too. It is so special to me to be able to share something I love so much with my boys. And to see the joy on their faces too.

Here are a few pictures from our day.

Jordan had this same look on his face all day. For every animal.

there it is again

Small Victories

Lifestyle changes are hard. Slowly, and without my even noticing it, I started making lifestyle changes and suddenly I woke up one day realizing how unhealthy my behavior had become. I had gained an embarrassing amount of weight and gotten myself into bad unhealthy habits. And now I am trying to slowly, and without my even noticing it, change those behaviors again into healthy habits.

I’ve started by celebrating my small victories. The little things I do that will — hopefully — some day add up to big results. A small victory can be taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work or parking farther away from the door to a store. It can be taking the dog for a walk even if I am too tired or saying no to a snack or dessert that I don’t really need. It can be choosing healthy items for dinner — like salad or fish — instead of pizza and pasta. Or simply stopping eating when I feel full. That seems logical and yet it’s something I struggle with.

Yesterday’s small victory happened at the end of a long day. We came home and I started pulling things out to make pasta salad when I realized I didn’t have one of the ingredients. How easy it would have been to jump in my car and drive to the store to pick it up. It would have taken no more than ten minutes. Instead, without even really putting much thought into it, I jumped on my bike and biked to the store and back. And I felt great about myself for doing so!

And that’s what I’m trying to do more of — small steps to a healthier lifestyle. Steps that I don’t necessarily even think about. I’m trying to build habits of health into my daily life. The goal isn’t to lose the weight, although that would be GREAT, the goal is to become a healthier version of me. Someone I can be proud of and someone who will be a good role model for my kids.

What are your small victories? What have you done to improve your health today?

The Duck Pond

One of the things we like to do sometimes now that summer is here is to head over to the duck pond to feed the ducks. The duck pond is a cute little park/pond area outside of one of the mental health hospitals in our area. It is such a serene little place and usually there is nobody else there. I took the boys there a couple weeks ago now and here are a few pictures from our experience. It was Jordan’s first time really feeding the ducks.

Our 6th Anniversary

Yesterday Matt and I celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary. We like to follow the traditional anniversary gift ideas for each year and this year happened to be candy/sugar. Anyone who knows Matt knows how perfect that was! So I set out to the store to find six of his favorite candies. I wanted to make a candy bouquet for him. Unfortunately, some of his favorite candies were not the easiest to work with but in the end, I think the bouquet turned out nicely. I just wasn’t able to include the Red Vines in it.

To make the bouquet I used a flower foam, craft sticks, and a hot glue gun. I glued two of each candy onto one stick so there would be no “back” side to them. Then I stuck the sticks into the flower foam. I lined the bottom of the vase with skittles in a rainbow pattern — or at least attempted to! It didn’t turn out quite like I had hoped. Then I put the Starburst on top of that. I had to stick the flower foam all the way into the bottom of the vase for stabilization so I put a small piece of tissue paper underneath it so it wouldn’t look so ugly. I think it turned out pretty cute, especially given what I was working with. What do you think?

Proud Mama Monday 6/25/12

Jordan is saying more and more words and copying almost everything we say. He is putting 2-3 words together at times even.

Jacob can buckle his car seat buckles all be himself now.

We put the boys together in a big boy full-size bed. While it was rough going the first night, they have really done well with the transition. It is so cute to see them sleeping together.

Jacob was accepted into pre-school! I cannot believe he is big enough to go yet.

Six Years

Six years ago I held onto my Dad’s arm and both laughed and cried simultaneously as he walked me down the aisle. Six years ago, I stood in front of our family and friends and promised to love and cherish you as we joined our lives and hearts together. Six years ago, I married my best friend.

Happy anniversary, Babe! I love you!!
